That impact had quite an effect!

I like to think that words have an effect, not an impact. I had an impacted tooth once, but my life was NOT impacted by the pain, it was affected. Someone rear-ended me once, that was quite an impact. My car was totaled, but I suffered no serious injuries. And no, the accident did not negatively impact my opinion of stupid uninsured drivers. Its effect was to give me a greater appreciation of the flexibility of one's spine.

Reticent and reluctant are not the same, damnit.

A common error these days that really grates is the use of reticent instead of reluctant. Even broadcasters are making this error!  Argh. We have such a beautiful language, I wish more people would learn the pleasure of choosing the right word. It's much more fun and interesting.
